Weight gain can be frustrating, especially if you feel that you’re doing everything in your power to lose weight. However, in spite of how hard you work out or how carefully you’re counting your calories, the scale continues to rise or sit at a stand-still. This is beyond frustrating. The causes of weight gain could be many and will vary per person. Here are 7 unexpected reasons you may be gaining weight.

Common Causes and Uncommon Causes of Weight Gain

#1 - Medication: Certain medications commonly cause weight gain as a side effect. If you’ve started any new medications recently and you’re baffled by a recent weight gain, maybe it’s from the new medication. Weight gain is common with various types of birth control.

#2 – Metabolism: As we age, our metabolism tends to change. This can be frustrating for anyone that's never had a problem eating whatever the heck they want to eat without fear of a weight gain. Metabolism changes generally begin to occur in the early 30s and progress with age. But have no fear, with a regular exercise regimen, you could increase your metabolism again or give it the "good fight" at the very least.

#3 – Lack of Exercise: Maybe you’re not getting enough exercise but you eat healthy, so you’re baffled. Working at a job where you sit sedentary all day could lead to weight gain regardless of how healthy you eat. Try to set aside time to work out, even if it’s just 2-3 days per week.

#4 - Health Issues: There could be an underlying health issue causing your unexpected weight gain. Consider a visit to your doctor if you’re really concerned. Some health issues that cause weight gain include thyroid disorders, chronic stress, depression, polycystic ovary syndrome, hormonal changes, and cushing’s syndrome.

#5 - Diet: If you frequently eat out or find that you eat a lot of junk food, your diet could be the culprit of a recent weight gain. Sometimes it’s hard to eat healthy when you live a busy on-the-go life, but it can be done with smart menu choices when eating out, or by eating out on occasion versus every day. Make it a treat to eat and try to bring something healthy with you to work or school for lunch or dinner. Avoid vending machines as much as possible and count the calories of everything, even in your drinks. This includes how much cream and sugar you’re putting into your coffee if you’re a coffee drinker.

#6 – Pregnancy: Hey ladies, could there be a bun in the oven. If "that time of the month" has yet to arrive, you may wish to pick up a pregnancy test to find out if your recent weight gain is due to a future new arrival.

#7 – Injury: Any type of injury that makes it difficult to move around could very well cause weight gain. This is especially common with any type of back injury or neck injury. Once the injury has healed, consult with your doctor about finding an exercise regimen that is safe for you if losing weight is a concern for you.

But hey, maybe you haven't gained any weight at all. Maybe your scale is lying to you. Be sure that your scale is accurate before freaking out that you've gained weight, because sometimes scales lie. Unless, of course, your jeans reveal the truth, but this hidden truth is only between you and your jeans.
